Ever thought of bringing your own silverware into the dining hall? I certainly have – after working behind the scenes of Amherst’s Dining Hall Valentine for a semester and seeing the dishwashing process, I try not to think about the cleanliness of my dinner utensils and dishes (they’re sterile, for sure, but that doesn’t mean some bits aren’t left behind….gross).
Apparently, carrying around one’s spoon and knife in one’s belt was the fashion back in the day, according to this webpage, which details the history of eating utensils (who knew?). Perhaps Amherst will see this a similar trend next year. 2011: year of the spoon-belt.
